When you are choosing a personal trainer learn who your personal trainer is by asking them various questions.
Some questions you can consider asking are:
What do they currently do other than training their clients?
This will allow you to learn about their lifestyle. Is their lifestyle like yours or what you want it to be like? If it is similar to your own then it is more likely they will understand your own goals, desires, limitations etc.
What did they do before they were training you?
This is basically asking your potential trainer for their resume. This is a very applicable and acceptable thing to ask for. After all you are basically looking to be this person's part time employer. What have they accomplished in fitness, sports, etc.? Relate their experience to your own goals. For example, if you are looking to become a better athlete are they currently an athlete or were they in the past?
Do they have any other occupations?
This may seem like an odd question but I feel like it is a very important one. We are all busy people and making or missing a training session can easily boil down to whether or not it fits into your hectic schedule. If training isn't your personal trainer's main focus it may not be easy for them to fit your schedule around theirs and vice versa.
What are their own goals in training themselves?
It's pretty obvious, all personal trainers should be training themselves as well. If they don't value their own physical fitness how could they value yours? That being said, having a personal trainer with goals similar to your own can really help motivate you. In fact, in some cases where it doesn't hinder your own personal development you could even begin to actually train in conjunction with your trainer instead of just having your trainer facilitate your own exercises. With the aid and guidance of a personal trainer and the added motivation of someone else training with you may be just what you need to push you to the next level of physical fitness.
All of these questions can give you a great idea as to how they are going to push you and help you achieve your fitness goals.
